Not only has the trial that finished today of those responsible for the attack unpicked one of the most cynical attempts by any government of recent times to distort public understanding of such an event - the bid by Spain's conservative government to label the attacks as the work of Basque separatists - but they have also helped undermine the idea, still surprisingly widespread, that the global wave of violence associated with modern extremist Islamic militancy that we have seen in the past 10 years is all orchestrated by some kind of giant, sprawling terrorist organisation called al-Qaida.
The conservative Popular party government suffered an unexpected defeat in a general election three days after the attacks. Since then, Spanish politics has been marked by bitterness, recriminations and bad faith, as the Popular party continued to insist that Basque separatists of the outlawed group Eta, and not Islamic militants, were behind the attacks.
A Madrid court at last passed sentence on 21 people involved in the attacks on Wednesday October 31st, though seven of the accused were found not guilty. Even more importantly, it laid out the known facts in the bombings. ETA was not involved. Violent Islamist radicals were entirely to blame. That was good news for Mr Zapatero and his Socialist Party. He is expected to call a March election. It is bad news for the PP, which had helped to fan the conspiracy theories.

"But the PP said the initiative was "a huge mistake" that rakes up memories of the worst time in Spain's recent history. "Zapatero has brought division and confrontation, and reopened the wounds of the past," said Angel Acebes, the PP's general secretary. The PP has never dissociated itself from Franco, and many members covertly admire him."
