En los últimos años la cinematografía sobre la guerra de Irak está creciendo ad nausea. Dentro de la marea de documentales, ficción y series televisivas que tratan el tema, hay algunas obras que sobresalen y que merece la pena resaltar.
En primer lugar, está el magnífico documental "No end in Sight"de Charles Ferguson, que durante el año pasado fue premiado en Sundance, y que fue nominado a mejor documental por la Academia. El director es PhD en Ciencia Política por MIT. Así, a pesar de ser un ataque frontal a la administración Bush, nada tiene que ver la pieza con las obras de Michael Moore: el nivel de seriedad y rigurosidad es incomparablemente más alto. A pesar de que en algunos momentos el público se pueda reír, por no llorar, ante lo visto, no es ni mucho menos un documental hecho para entretener. Lo recomiendo si queréis un resumen riguroso y detallado, a la vez de nada aburrido, sobre la guerra.
Por otro lado, está la película de Kimberly Pierce, la que fue directora de la rompedora "Boy's don't cry" (1998). Stop-Loss, sobre los combatientes norteamericanos de Irak, y la política de recrutamiento camuflado de la administración Bush. Se trata en este caso, de un filme de ficción. Está muy bien hecho y trata problemas muy reales, como el famoso desorden post-traumático (PTSD) que sufren muchos combatientes al volver. Está protagonizada por Ryan Phillipe, buen actor y atractivo. Aquí podéis leer la crítica del New Yorker a la película, que no está nada mal. La película no es excelente, pero si muy recomendable y entretenida. Después de verla me vinieron ganas de ir a pasar una temporada a Tejas, comprarme un gorro y un caballo, e ir a rodeos los fines de semanas.

Bueno, el hecho es que Irak está siendo el segundo Vietnam para Estados Unidos. No sólo en la realidad sino también en el mundo del celluloide. No sé si es por la contemporaniedad, pero a mi me parecen que las consecuencias de esta guerra, sin embargo, son mucho peores. Creo que la razón es el tipo de guerra o "warfare" que está teniendo lugar. A diferencia de la guerra irregular de Vietnam, donde un ejército grande se enfrentaba a un pequeño, y donde había una guerra de guerrillas, aquí la cosa es mucho más anárquica. La guerra está basada en ataques y asaltos en frentes inexistentes- no sólo borrosos. Esto, combinado a la avanzada maquinaria de guerra que manejan todos lados, hace que sean muchas más las víctimas y también muchos más los gravemente mutilados. Tanto entre civiles como entre combatientes.
Ayer, cuando salía de la proyección del documental, tenía dos ideas en la cabeza: una era que nunca había pensado que podía odiar a un político más de lo que odio a Donald Rumsfeld, la otra es que si John MacCain gana las elecciones presidenciales de Noviembre de 2008 -es decir, si el público americano no pasa cuentas al partido Republicano, por todos los errores cometidos antes y durante esta guerra-, a lo mejor es que este país, Estados Unidos, no merece nada la pena.

Lo cierto es que Stop-Loss, siendo una película bastante decente, y una rareza (por lo que le cuesta a su directora rodar películas), está siendo un poco desastre en términos de taquilla. Como las anteriores películas bélicas, por eso.

Tengo por ver el "Taxi to torture", a ver si es tan bueno como lo ponen, aunque el tema hace que me cueste ponerme a ello.
Si lo ves justo después de "no end in sight y le oyes decir lo del "henny penny the sky is falling" y el "stuff happens" varias veces seguidas dan ganas de dejarle en calzoncillos con un cartel que diga "I hate Ali" y mandarle a Sadr City por unas horas.
Lo peor del asunto ya no es que se trate de un tipo de guerra especial ni nada de eso. El tipo de guerra es el de toda la vida fuera del imaginario occidental Europa, que lleva pasando todo el siglo XX sitios como África, por ejemplo, mientras los demás trazaban circunferencias en los mapas con el centro en las grandes ciudades y contaban los muertos por megadeaths. El problema es que USA es un bando más en una guerra civil muy profunda y es el bando políticamente más débil, aunque el más bestia. Todos los jugadores se han dado cuenta (Iran, lo Chiies, los nacionalistas, los integristas) de que no pintan nada alli, excepto ellos. Todos intentan aprovecharse de ellos mientras dure o esquivarlos con cuidado por que saben que aún seguirán allí para cuando los USA se hayan ido.
El verdadero problema de USA, el de fondo, es que nunca ha tenido nada que hacer en Iraq. Fue una guerra de gabinete en las cuales pegas cuatro tortas haces el baile de la victoria y sales corriendo. Pero no, en el momento que se acabaron los tanques en el desierto los aviones y las fanfarrias se encontraron con una guerra de ocupación que no habían planeado. Pese a todo las guerras de ocupación siempre han sido especialidad occidental, incluso en Europa, la gran parte nunca contada de la IIGM no es más que eso: ocupadores, insurgencia y muchos civiles ejecutados. Esto no supone nunca un problema para un ejército de verdad solo hay que acostumbrarse, echar carne y se más bestia, astuto y negociador que tu enemigo. Exige compromiso y mucha sangre, lo cual tienes si la guerra que tienes entre manos está justificada. Y no es necesario nada dramático como una amenaza inminente, excusas como "vamos a civilizarlos y a enseñarles al redentor y a la reina" han servido para que los ingleses hicieran cualquier salvajada por medio mundo. Pero los estadounidenses no tienen ni una razón ni una idea ni ganas siquiera, lo que se traduce en menos entrega que la del chaval que lo hace cerca de su casa junto a su tío y los primitos.
La guerra de ocupación se perdió allá por 2006 y ahora se trata de mediar en una guerra civil especialmente difícil por que hay muchos bandos con diferentes planes. Como mucho vas a poder apoyar al que haga la carnicería más gorda hasta que todo el mundo se canse. Y cada vez están perdiendo más votos en esa elección mientras Irán los gana.
